Chandelier 101: How to Choose and Hang Your New Light Fixture

Chandeliers are one of the most popular choices for homeowners when it comes to statement lighting, and rightly so! They add opulence and elegance to any space, transforming the room and lending a soft, shimmery feel to any design. When considering installing a chandelier, there are several questions to ask yourself:

  • Who is doing the installation?
  • Should I hire a pro?
  • If I don’t hire a pro, how should I go about installing it myself?
  • Which styles are the most popular?
  • What if I’m going for a timeless look?

We answer all these questions and more below.

Step 1: Choose Your Chandelier

When adding a chandelier to your space, the first step is deciding exactly what fixture you’ll be installing. We suggest taking cues from a few things. First, set a budget. Chandeliers can become expensive very quickly, especially the larger and more opulent you get. After identifying a budget, find a piece within your range that will fit the size and style of your space. Look at your room’s layout and decide where the chandelier will go and how long it should hang. Keep in mind these important factors when selecting your chandelier:

  • The ceiling height and room size
  • The furniture underneath the fixture
  • The shape of the chandelier

Answering these questions will help you decide on the size, shape and placement of the chandelier, making the installation process easier for you or the pro you decide to hire.

Step 2: Pro or DIY?

If this is your first go-round with a large light fixture, we suggest calling an expert. Hanging a chandelier requires skill, knowledge and intuition that often takes years to get right. While hiring a pro is an extra cost, it’s a lot less expensive than rewiring your home because you accidentally snagged the wrong wire. However, if the chandelier is a smaller piece and you’re familiar with your home’s wiring, do a little at a time yourself. If you need help, stop and consult a professional.

Step 3: Configure Your Furniture

Chandeliers are traditionally the focal point of a space. With that idea in mind, furniture should accent the lighting in a configuration that is uncluttered and perfectly spaced to match the opulence and shine of your new chandelier. Placing chandeliers near windows and mirrors will add extra shimmer to a space, while a room with little to no natural light or reflection will have a warmer glow instead.

Have you ever hung a chandelier? What are some of the steps you took to ensure you hung your statement lighting precisely?
